☆ Charlie’s Bar: A little bar in Northern Ireland has won hearts across the world with its moving holiday commercial

But one little bar in Northern Ireland, Charlie’s Bar, has eclipsed them all this year, producing a heart-warming commercial that has gone viral, as social media users praised its “beautiful message” and “poignant” storyline. The video, which is just over two minutes long, finishes with a quote often attributed to the poet W.B. Its manager, Una Burns, worked closely with Teague to produce the commercial. Teague said Burns and a friend came up with the storyline after encountering several customers who were lonely and came to the bar in search of company. “I think this video has really impacted people in ways that we’d hoped but in some ways that we never imagined, either.”

This is not the first time I’ve made this declaration, but it’s worth noting again as winter approaches. That’s because Chenin is a white wine particularly well-suited to winter drinking. (Yes, even turkey—especially if it’s a Chenin from Vouvray.) A good Chenin can be made sparkling or still, dry or sweet or somewhere in the middle, though I tend to drink its dry versions the most. A top Chenin costs a fraction of what a top Chardonnay goes for—also worth considering when stocking up for holiday entertaining.

SWEET WINES are not popular, retailers have told me over and over again. A few weeks ago, one even pantomimed a customer running away. I like sweet wines, even if I don’t drink them as often as I do dry ones, and I usually need a reason or special occasion to try them. Two years ago, for instance, I wrote about pairing sweet wines with Thanksgiving pie. This time I decided to focus on sweet wines that are simply so good I would recommend them even to dry-wine diehards.

Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

WHY ARE less-acclaimed wines so often compared to their more-famous counterparts by means of a diminutive term? I’m thinking of Rosso di Montalcino, the red wine from Tuscany that’s often referred to as “baby Brunello.” Although Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino are made in the same place from the same grape, Brunello is considered one of the world’s best wines; Rosso, more of an also-ran. But is that fair, or even accurate? Talking with Brunello producers in the past several weeks, I found them just as focused on making a first-rate Rosso as a great Brunello. After tasting some 15 Rossos, I think many of those producers have succeeded in making Brunello-like wines that cost a lot less.

In conversations with Sabrina, Saúl toggles between English and Spanish, reserving the latter for colloquialisms or teasing, and the mixture gives their dialogue an organic rhythm. He uses the same blend of languages with his lover, Gerardo (Raúl Castillo), a married luchador with kids whom Saúl sees in secret. and AIDS panic was at its shrillest, and although the real-life Cassandro was sometimes rebuffed by homophobic opponents, the movie never mentions the epidemic. “Don’t you think he’s sexy?” Saúl says, referring to Cassandro as if he were a third person who might join them. The trouble is that lucha libre, built on glitz, is anything but naturalistic.

ARE WE in the middle of rosé malaise? According to the retailers I talked with, the answer is yes…with an asterisk. Thanks to the rise of competing drinks (hard seltzer, canned cocktails), continuing Covid fallout and a boom in production all over the world that helped fuel a rosé glut, rosé sales are definitely less robust than in years past. Yet certain rosés are selling well. Indeed, some wines seem to be veritably malaise-proof.

Venice, Italy CNN —Until recently, the Venice Architecture Biennale — arguably the world’s largest architecture exhibition — has drawn crowds for its (mainly Western) star appeal. In a May 20 Facebook post titled “Venice Biennale Blues,” Zaha Hadid Architects’ principal, Patrik Schumacher, wrote that “the ‘Architecture’ Biennale is mislabeled and should stop laying claim to the title of architecture. The German pavilion, which is displaying construction waste produced by 2022’s Venice Art Biennale is a case in point. The German Pavilion at the 18th Architecture Biennale is displaying and repurposing constuction waste from the city's Art Biennale last year.
